During the last years, the northern Hills of
Cordoba have become a natural shelter for the eared dove (Zenaida Auriculata).
As the lowlands were cleared up for farming, these birds have concentrated in
the highlands, where the wildness of the land, the thick vegetation and the
abundance of water and natural food, provide excellent conditions for their
development.
During the grain harvest season flocks of doves
come down to the cultivated lands in search of the best grain they can easily
find, turning into a real pest for the crops.
But this high concentration of birds has also
made the north of Córdoba Province a paradise for the dove shooter who looks for
intense action and high volume shooting. It may be said, indeed, that there is
not a better place in the world for dove shooting.
After many years in this activity, and having
hunt professionally in all the areas of our generous country, we have chosen
this zone for our dove shooting programs.
Whether hunt in the highlands or in the
cultivated lands in the East, our dove always offers an impressive show to the
expert’s eyes.
The permanent flight and the amount of possible
targets are the main attractions.
During the last three years the average shell
consumption has been over 1000 rounds a day per hunter, which gives an idea of
the intensity of the action.
A typical hunting day starts with a good
breakfast at the ranch and transfer to the field. The time schedule varies
according to the season, weather and behavior of the doves, but we usually try
to be in the field at dawn.
We hunt all day long, with a break for lunch,
this is the right time for a typical Argentinean “asado” , we serve different
cuts of selected beef after an entree prepared with doves, three different kinds
of salads, desert, wine, beer, soft drinks and coffee. Then we go back to the
Estancia “La Paz” at sunset, where the exhausted party will have the chance to
enjoy an open bar service and have some rest or a massage before dinner.
In the field each hunter has an assistant (“bird
boy) who has to set up the shooting position, supply the shells and cold drinks,
recover the game and clean the place at the end of the hunt. He will, of course,
assist the client in any situation required.
Apart from the bird boys, an English speaking
professional hunting guide will always be in the field to attend to any problem
that may go beyond the bird boy’s capacity.
The shooting fields are determined each day
according to the information given by our “scouts”, who regularly go over the
wide area where our fields are located.
